Presenting Jackie Chan, the philanthropist, in a sickly show of gurning corporate brand-building which will test the patience of even the most hardcore of Chan fans. Jackie has now seemingly done away with even the most flimsy pretence of playing two-dimensional characters. Here he simply plays “Jackie Chan”, the ageing international action star who seems to live a life not too dissimilar to the ker-razy characters he plays in his films. The premise is flimsy to say the least: he adopts a baby panda from a Chinese zoo and mercenaries break in and attempt to steal it. There is at least some context to Chan’s panda passion project. In 2008, he adopted two baby pandas following a devastating earthquake in Sichuan province, and ever since, he can be found at red carpet events posing with celebrities holding stuffed panda toys, which has become something of an internet meme. You would have to be pretty hardhearted to find fault with anyone using their celebrity to raise awareness for a just cause, especially considering how the panda – the national mascot of China – remains an endangered species. How disappointing it is, then, to find Jackie – and more often than not his thankless co-star, Shi Ce – simulating the embrace of a CGI panda cub throughout much of the film like it’s a ticking bomb. It’s the sort of distracting superimposition that constantly reminds you of the artifice on display – and let’s not even go there with the rhinoceros sequence (it’s not quite as bad as the lions in Vanguard or Kung Fu Yoga, but it’s close). Chan, aged 70 (!), still has agility and charm to spare, with the odd twinkle of creativity in his action routines, but it’s now undeniable that we are watching a star entering his final act. Small children – probably the film’s target audience? – should enjoy the overall silliness, but without a concept of Jackie Chan’s iconic screen legacy, they may well struggle to understand what’s going on.
